In a thrilling showdown at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, the Comilla Victorians emerged victorious in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2023, securing their fourth title with a convincing 7-wicket win over the Sylhet Strikers on February 16th.
Despite a strong batting performance from the Sylhet Strikers, with Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto both scoring fifties to set a challenging target of 176 in the BPL 2023 final, the Comilla Victorians showed their mettle. Johnson Charles and Litton Das, both contributing with half-centuries, and a crucial cameo from Moeen Ali, propelled the Victorians to their second consecutive BPL title.
In the first innings, Sylhet Strikers managed to reach 175/7 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to Shanto’s impressive 64 off 45 balls and an unbeaten 74 from Mushfiqur Rahim. Mustafizur Rahman shone with the ball for the Victorians, claiming 2 wickets. In response, Charles played a spectacular knock of 79 not out off 52 balls, while Das contributed with 55 off 39 balls, and Ali finished with an unbeaten 25 off 17 balls. Their collective effort led the Comilla Victorians to comfortably chase down the target with 7 wickets in hand and 4 balls to spare. For the Strikers, Rubel Hossain was their most successful bowler with 2 wickets.
Throughout the BPL 2023 season, both teams had been strong contenders, finishing at the top of the points table with 18 points each, separated only by Net Run Rate. They clashed in Qualifier 1, where the Comilla Victorians secured a 4-wicket win over the Sylhet Strikers. The Strikers, however, bounced back, defeating the Rangpur Riders by 19 runs in Qualifier 2 to earn their spot in the final showdown.
