According to recent reports from News 18, the latest update reveals that Gautam Gambhir, mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), will not be participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to his involvement in upcoming elections in India.
Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian cricketer and current East Delhi BJP MP, will take a one-season break from IPL to focus on his political commitments during the elections next year. This move is aligned with his significant role within the political party, where he’s expected to play a pivotal role.
It has been clarified that Gambhir will not be switching teams but will simply take a temporary leave. Contrary to speculations, he will not be leaving the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise. There were rumors about his potential departure from LSG and talks with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) management, but these rumors proved to be unfounded.
In other developments, Lucknow Super Giants have appointed Justin Langer as their new head coach for the upcoming season of IPL 2024. This decision followed the conclusion of Andy Flower’s two-year contract with LSG after IPL 2023. Langer’s selection was influenced by Gambhir’s recommendation, as per reports from Cricbuzz. Langer, the former Australian head coach, has an impressive coaching record, leading Australia to victory in the T20 World Cup 2021 and securing three Big Bash League titles with Perth Scorchers in the first four years of the tournament.
This marks Langer’s inaugural coaching stint in the IPL, adding an intriguing dimension to the team’s preparations for IPL 2024. The franchise officially confirmed Langer’s appointment as head coach via their social media platforms.
Ahead of the 2022 season, Lucknow Super Giants, one of the two recently introduced teams in the IPL, was acquired by RP Sanjiv Goenka Group for an unprecedented amount of Rs 7090 crore (approximately US$940 million). This conglomerate had previously held ownership of the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise during 2016 and 2017. Its key players are KL Rahul, Avesh Khan and Quinton de Kock.
